Meat Chickens

The meat chickens are in their fourth week, growing, eating, but they are such pathetic little creatures. I am moving them on to fresh grass morning and night and they love a pick at the fresh green. They also love the sun in the morning.
They grow so fast that their feathers can't keep up and they have big bare bits and great big feet, just shows what selective breeding can do. They are supposed to be a processing size in another two weeks but I am sure they will need longer. There must be a more natural type of meat bird out there. If you know of one let me know.

They always look like they have had a hard night.

See if you can get hold of some Inghams chicks, they are down to about 38 days now. Was 42 when I was with them.

Thirty eight days just seems wrong.

It is a bit sad really, what manipulated genetics do. They are the unsurvivors of the fattest. ;)

Just found your blog. So interesting to see you keep so many animal types. Is it a poly face style model but with sheep not beef? So interesting... My hubby and I are in deep savings to by a farm mode and trying to learn as much as we can fit into our heads along the way!! :)

We just love our farm life and how we are able to pursue little interests just for the education. In the meat chickens. I have had more deaths than expected, it might be too late in the year to raise them successfully on pasture.

It must be getting cold there now! Starting to really cool down even where we are in the hunter. I'm sorry to hear about the deaths. I don't think meat chickens are a very robust lot.... Are there other breeds to try next year?
